Few American fortifications were as battered as Fort Sumter, the brick stronghold guarding the entrance to Charleston Harbor, and this watercolor shows it in the ruined state left by the Union bombardment. Its subjects include a Confederate military standard, a reminder that Confederate forces held the fort after Major Robert Anderson's Union garrison surrendered it in April 1861. During the summer and fall of 1863, Union artillery and naval guns pounded the walls, reducing much of the masonry to rubble while the flag still flew. The drawing is signed by A. Vizitelly and inscribed with the date 1863, making it a rare contemporary view of the fort in that condition.
