Spanish Fort, a Confederate earthwork guarding the eastern approaches to Mobile, fell to Union forces on the night of April 8 and 9, 1865, after a siege by troops under Maj. Gen. Edward Canby. The engraving shows the siege operations, with trenches, batteries, and the fortified lines that the Army of the West Mississippi pressed toward the works. Its capture opened the way to the city, and Confederate forces abandoned Mobile within days, a late but telling step in the collapse of Confederate resistance along the Gulf Coast.
