A Civil War chart that combines a railroad map with inset views of places is a useful look at how the Union army planned for Alabama. Maps of this kind were used by commanders who depended on rail lines to move troops and supplies through the state. Alabama's railroads made it a strategic target in the war's final year, and in the spring of 1865 Union cavalry under James H. Wilson moved across the state, destroying rail lines and industrial sites. Today the chart reads as both a planning tool and a record of the places the army considered important.
