Pictures of the Library of Congress's Map Division show a reading and reference space devoted to one of the institution's largest and most heavily used collections. The Library moved into the Jefferson Building, which opened in 1897, and its map holdings grew steadily through the early twentieth century, so rooms like this one served researchers working with atlases, surveys and charts. The caption card gives no date and its details are unverified, so the exact year of the view is uncertain. Still, the space reflects the Beaux-Arts design of the building, with its tall ceilings, long tables and built-in cabinetry for storing large flat sheets.
