The Library of Congress's catalog Division, shown here in a photograph dated to about 1927, captures the working heart of the institution during the years when its card catalog was the main way scholars and staff found books. Card catalogs of this kind, with drawers of cards arranged by author, title and subject, were the backbone of research in large libraries, and the rows of cabinets and staff at work convey how much labor went into keeping that system accurate. The Library of Congress had grown into one of the largest libraries in the world by this period, so the division was central to its ability to serve Congress and the public alike.
