The title points to the Library of Congress's Music Division in its earlier quarters, before the collections moved into the new building. Until the Thomas Jefferson Building opened in 1897, the Library occupied rooms in the U.S. Capitol, where its holdings had grown steadily since Thomas Jefferson sold his library to the nation in 1815. The record gives no photographer or exact location, but the picture belongs to the 1890-1930 period, when the Library's music holdings were expanding through copyright deposits. It offers a glimpse of the working spaces where that collection was once kept.
