The Library of Congress's Card Division was the office that produced and distributed catalog cards to libraries across the country, a service that let smaller libraries order standardized records rather than cataloging every book themselves. This general view shows the working interior of that operation in the years between roughly 1900 and 1930, when the Library was expanding its role as a national bibliographic center. The record gives no photographer or exact date, but the scene reflects the period's dependence on rows of desks, filing cabinets and manual card handling. Pictures like this one document how a centralized cataloging system was built by hand.
