The Library of Congress bindery was the workshop where books and periodicals were repaired, sewn, and bound so they could stand up to heavy use on the shelves. This general view shows the working floor as it looked sometime between 1910 and 1930, a period when the library was growing fast and its collections were expanding far beyond what the original building was designed to hold. Binding at a national library was painstaking hand work, with rows of benches, presses, and sewing frames turning damaged volumes back into usable books. Photographs like this one record a part of the institution that visitors rarely saw but that kept its holdings in circulation.
