This view is set in the bindery of the Library of Congress's Jefferson Building, the Beaux-Arts structure that opened in 1897 as the library's main home. Bookbinding there was largely hand work: sewing signatures, repairing spines, and fitting covers onto volumes that were heavily used or worn. The caption card gives no date, and its details are unverified, so the exact year is uncertain. Still, the scene shows how a working workroom operated inside a building meant to impress visitors, with the everyday labor of preserving books taking place behind its public halls.
