The Library of Congress began in 1800 as a reference collection for members of Congress, housed in the U.S. Capitol. British forces burned the Capitol in 1814, destroying most of that collection, and Thomas Jefferson sold his own library of about 6,500 volumes to Congress to restart it. The institution outgrew the Capitol and moved into its own monumental building nearby, which opened in 1897 and remains one of the most recognizable landmarks on Capitol Hill. The date of this view is not recorded, but its subject traces a national library that grew from a lawmakers' shelf into one of the largest libraries in the world.
