The "view from west" in this 1920s print points to the Library of Congress as a building seen from one side rather than a close-up of a single detail, so the composition itself is the point of interest. The library's main building, the Jefferson Building, opened in 1897 in the Beaux-Arts style, with a classical facade, domes, and sculpted ornament that made it a showpiece of the capital. By the 1920s it was already a fixture of the Capitol Hill neighborhood, and photographs like this one document how the building looked in the years between the world wars. Its wide stone surfaces and rhythm of windows and columns are worth studying for anyone interested in early twentieth-century civic architecture.
