Visitors to the Library of Congress's Division of Prints once saw its holdings displayed in an exhibition hall, and this photograph records one corner of that space, the west-south gallery. The Library had moved into its Thomas Jefferson Building only a few years before this picture was taken, and the building's ornate Beaux-Arts interiors were meant to present the national library as a center of learning and culture. The print came to the collection in 1928 by transfer from the Librarian's Office, a reminder that images often moved between offices before being cataloged for research.
