A 1958 view of the South Gallery on the second floor shows a marble floor freshly repaired as new work gets underway nearby. The photograph was made by the Library of Congress Office of Buildings and Grounds, the department responsible for keeping the building in working order. The Thomas Jefferson Building, which opened in 1897, was finished with marble and carved stone throughout, so floor upkeep was a constant task, and this picture captures one of the routine repairs that kept those surfaces in use.
