East Machinery Room 2 in the Jefferson Building is the setting for this 1958 view of the equipment that supported the Library's operations. The photoprint was made by the Library's Office of Buildings and Grounds, whose staff documented the building's systems and maintenance work. The Jefferson Building opened in 1897 as the Library's first home of its own, and its ornate public rooms depended on a great deal of unseen mechanical plant, including boilers, pumps and ventilating equipment. Pictures like this one show the working side of that architecture, the machinery and stone-lined service spaces behind the decoration.
