The machinery in this 1958 view is from East Machinery Room 2 in the Jefferson Building, a room that housed the equipment behind the building's everyday operation. The Library's Office of Buildings and Grounds made the photoprint, which fits a broader record of the Library's interiors taken that year. The Jefferson Building opened in 1897 as the Library's first building of its own, and its mechanical plant had to keep a large complex of stacks, offices and reading rooms running. The caption card's subject tags are older transcriptions that have not been fully verified.
