Crews are caught mid-repair on a marble floor in the second-floor South Gallery, with the work still underway when the photograph was taken in 1958. The Library of Congress's main building, completed in 1897, is finished throughout in marble and other decorative stone, so its floors took heavy foot traffic and needed periodic restoration. The Office of Buildings and Grounds, which maintained the complex, documented work like this, and the caption's tags on floor maintenance, machinery and building stone point to the practical side of keeping a public landmark in use. It is a record of routine upkeep rather than a ceremony.
