A marble floor after repair is the focus of this 1958 view looking north from the south end of the second-floor South Gallery. The Library's Office of Buildings and Grounds made the print, and the caption card's subject tags point to floor maintenance, building stone and machinery, which suggests the work involved both the stone and the equipment that kept the building running. Marble and other decorative stone were central to the Library's Washington buildings, especially the Thomas Jefferson Building, which opened in 1897 and was designed to display such materials. The record is based on old, unverified caption data, so the exact nature of the repair is best read from the image itself.
