Repaired marble flooring is the focus of this 1958 view of the South Gallery on the second floor of the Library of Congress, taken from the north side of the room. The Office of Buildings and Grounds made images like this to document the condition and upkeep of the building's interiors. The main Thomas Jefferson Building, which opened in 1897, is known for its marble and stone finishes, so a floor restoration was a notable piece of maintenance work. Look closely at the stone surface and the gallery's long sightlines to see how the public spaces were kept up in the late 1950s.
