Few rooms in the Jefferson Building are as far from the public reading rooms as East Machinery Room 2, which the Library's Office of Buildings and Grounds photographed in 1958. The picture shows the mechanical equipment that kept the building running behind its ornate marble halls, which opened in 1897 as the Library of Congress's first home of its own. The caption card's subject tracings also list floors, building stone and shelving, a reminder that upkeep in a building this size involved masonry and storage as well as machinery. Its plain, working character offers a useful contrast with the decorated spaces the building is known for.
