Looking north from the south corridor, this view takes in the Grand Stair Hall of the Library of Congress, the marble-lined heart of the Thomas Jefferson Building in Washington. The building was constructed in the 1890s and opened to the public in 1897, and its stairways and richly decorated halls were meant to impress visitors as much as to hold books. The L.C. Handy Studio of Washington made the print. The record dates it only tentatively, between 1895 and 1897, so it likely shows the interior as the building neared completion.
