Few interiors in Washington match the stair hall of the Congressional Library Building, the Beaux-Arts landmark now known as the Jefferson Building. This ink-on-linen drawing is an architectural working sheet, the kind used to plan and check a complex interior before construction. The library opened to the public in 1897 after years of debate over where Congress would house its growing collections, and its marble halls and ornate staircases were meant to express the nation's ambitions. Drawings like this one show how much of that splendor was settled on paper long before the building was finished.
