This cross-section of the Congressional Library Building shows the structure cut through to reveal its interior profile, a view architects used to plan how rooms, galleries and light would fit together. The drawing dates from between 1873 and 1892, before construction was complete, so it reflects the building's design stage rather than its finished form. The library, now known as the Thomas Jefferson Building, was designed largely by architects John L. Smithmeyer and Paul J. Pelz and opened to the public in 1897. Its sections like this one record the ambitious scale of the project.
