This drawing shows the circular reading room at the Library of Congress, the central space beneath the dome of the Thomas Jefferson Building in Washington, D.C. The building was completed in 1897, when the library moved out of the Capitol, and its reading room was among the most admired interiors of its day. Readers sat at radiating desks around a ring of bookcases, with the open book stacks beyond. Architectural drawings like this one record how the design was planned before the room was built, and they show the careful geometry that gave the space its unusual unity.
