A cross-section cut through the middle of the room shows how the Main Reading Room of the Library of Congress's Thomas Jefferson Building was meant to work, with its height, galleries, and desks laid out in one view. The room opened in 1897 as the library's public reading space, and its eight-sided plan under a tall iron-and-glass dome was designed to let readers and staff see across the whole floor. Drawings like this one were used to plan construction and to explain the building's structure. The mix of graphite, ink, watercolor, and color pencil shows the drafting and presentation work that went into a building of this scale.
