Rather than a view of the room's furnishings or readers, this ink drawing shows a section, a vertical cut through the building that reveals how the space is built up from floor to ceiling. Such drawings were used by architects and engineers to plan and document construction, so the image records structure as much as appearance. The Library of Congress's reading room, which opened in the Thomas Jefferson Building in 1897, is known for its large domed space, and a section drawing like this one helps explain how that height and light were engineered.
