Inside the Library of Congress, a reading room is the subject of this glass negative, one of many the National Photo Company made of Washington's public buildings around 1919 and 1920. The Library's main building, the Thomas Jefferson Building, opened in 1897 and was known for its ornate interiors, so its rooms were designed to impress visitors as well as to serve scholars. The plate measures 8 by 6 inches, and its record notes streaks and blemishes from the natural deterioration of the original coating.
