This photograph shows the House of Representatives Reading Room, one of the Library of Congress's reading rooms set aside for members of Congress rather than the general public. Its caption card records no date, so the view can only be placed within the Library's long service to Congress, which dates to the early 1800s. The print was made by Harris & Ewing, a Washington studio known for documenting government offices, officials, and political life in the early twentieth century. Viewers interested in how lawmakers consulted books and reference materials will find the room's furnishings and layout a useful record of the working spaces available to them.
