The Map Division reading room shows a working space for one of the Library of Congress's most specialized collections, where researchers examined atlases, charts, and single-sheet maps spread across large tables. The Library had moved into the newly completed Jefferson Building in Washington in 1897, and its map holdings grew steadily through the early twentieth century as surveys, government mapping, and donated collections arrived. Photographs like this one are useful for seeing how such rooms were arranged before later changes in storage and digital access. The print also reflects the period's preference for orderly, well-lit interiors where the work of scholarship took place.
