Unlike the building's grand public halls, this view shows a working space: the Map Division's rooms on the second floor, along the north side of the Library of Congress. The Library moved into its Thomas Jefferson Building in Washington, D.C., in 1897, and the division's maps, atlases, and charts were housed in rooms like these as the collection grew. The photograph dates from sometime between 1890 and 1930, a period when the Library was expanding and its reading and reference spaces were being organized for heavy use. Its record notes only the location, so the room's exact furnishings and occupants are not identified.
