The second floor plan of the Annex Building shows how the Library of Congress laid out one of its most ambitious expansions. The Annex, now known as the John Adams Building, was designed to relieve a main building that had run out of room for the nation's growing book collection almost as soon as it opened. Construction on the Annex began in the early 1930s, and its floors were planned around long book stacks, reading rooms, and staff workspaces. Studying a floor plan like this one reveals how the architects balanced storage capacity against the need for light, circulation, and efficient movement of materials.
