This sheet is a working floor plan of the second story of a Library of Congress building, drawn in graphite and wash on paper rather than a view of the exterior. Architectural plans like this one set out room layouts, circulation routes, and the placement of stairs and reading spaces before construction or renovation begins, so they show how the institution meant its rooms to function. The Library's Jefferson Building, completed in 1897 after a long construction period, was designed to house a rapidly growing national collection, and drawings of this kind record how that program was organized floor by floor. The sheet belongs to the Architecture, Design and Engineering drawings held by the Library's Prints and Photographs Division.
