Few plans of a major public building show how its upper floors were laid out before anyone walked through them, and this ink drawing of the second story of the Library of Congress does exactly that. It belongs to the Library's architectural and engineering drawings, which document the construction of its Capitol Hill complex. The Thomas Jefferson Building, the Library's main structure, was designed by the firm of Smithmeyer and Pelz and opened in 1897 after years of planning and construction. Plans like this one reveal how the architects arranged rooms, corridors and stairways to serve the public and the Library's growing collections.
