Unlike the many views of the Library of Congress that show its famous facade, this drawing records the second story as a floor plan, with its rooms and corridors laid out in ink and gouache. The main building, now called the Thomas Jefferson Building, was designed by John L. Smithmeyer and Paul J. Pelz and opened in 1897, and its upper floors housed reading rooms and book stacks central to the institution's work. Plans like this guided builders and recorded how the architects arranged a complex program for a national library, which makes them useful to historians who study how the building was meant to function.
