A second-floor plan of the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., this ink drawing shows how the building's upper level was laid out on paper before and during construction. Architectural plans like this one record room sizes, corridors, and the placement of stairs and walls, which helped the architects and builders coordinate the work. The library's main building on Capitol Hill, which opened in 1897, was among the largest and most ornate public buildings of its era. The drawing is a reference copy kept in the Library's own Prints and Photographs Division, where its architectural drawings are preserved.
