The third-floor plan of the Annex Building shows how the Library of Congress laid out its newest and largest home when the structure was taking shape in the early twentieth century. Architects drew such plans floor by floor to fix where the reading rooms, stacks, and offices would go, and this sheet lets a viewer trace the building's internal logic, from the heavy book storage that needed to be near the reading areas to the public spaces that connected them. The Annex, later named the John Adams Building, was built to relieve the crowding of the Jefferson Building, so the plan also records a deliberate effort to handle the library's rapidly growing collections.
