The Annex, later renamed the John Adams Building, was built to relieve the crowding that had overtaken the Library of Congress's main Jefferson Building, whose collections had outgrown their shelves. This basement plan shows the part of the complex most visitors never see, with much of the lower level given over to storage, service rooms, and mechanical systems rather than public reading space. It is a useful reminder that a working library depends as much on the spaces behind its reading rooms as on the rooms themselves.
