A floor plan of an upper level of the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., drawn in ink with color on paper. Plans like this were working documents for architects, engineers, and building staff, showing room layouts, walls, stairways, and circulation during design, construction, or renovation. The Library's growing collections pressed hard on its space, and it moved into the Thomas Jefferson Building, which opened in 1897, after decades of crowding in the Capitol. Drawings of its interior floors show how the institution planned to house books, readers, and staff under one roof.
