Few institutions in Washington have a more layered building history than the Library of Congress, and this floor plan records one stage of it in ink and watercolor. The record places it in the Architectural and Engineering drawings collection, and the color washes suggest it was made to show room arrangements clearly, not as a rough working sketch. The Library began as a small reading collection for Congress and outgrew its quarters in the Capitol, which led to the Jefferson Building, opened in 1897. Plans like this help researchers trace how those spaces were laid out and used.
