A section drawing of the Congressional Library Building, the structure now known as the Thomas Jefferson Building, is a planning document rather than a view of a finished place. It dates from sometime between 1873 and 1892, while the design was taking shape before construction began in 1890 and the building opened in 1897. Cutaway views like this one let architects and officials see interior spaces, floor levels, and structural layers that a facade could not reveal. The drawing is held in the Library of Congress's architectural and engineering drawings collection.
