Few spaces in the Library of Congress's Thomas Jefferson Building show its ambitions as plainly as the stair hall, and this graphite drawing on tracing paper captures it as a working design. The building, begun in the 1890s and opened in 1897, was designed by John L. Smithmeyer and Paul J. Pelz in the Beaux-Arts manner, with interiors meant to match the stature of a national library. Drawings like this one, from the library's architecture and engineering collection, show how the architects planned movement through the building before the marble and decoration were installed.
