Among the design studies in the Library of Congress's Architecture, Design and Engineering drawings, this sheet focuses on the marble arches and columns of the Congressional Library Building, now known as the Thomas Jefferson Building in Washington, D.C. Built in the 1890s, the building was meant to showcase American craftsmanship, with a richly ornamented interior in the Beaux-Arts manner that drew on many kinds of stone, mosaic and carved detail. Drawings like this one show how the designers worked out the proportions and finishes of those public spaces, making them useful both as design documents and as a window onto the building's interior.
