Few early views show the Library of Congress as a planned building rather than rooms inside the Capitol, which sets this 1873 perspective rendering apart. The library had been housed in the Capitol since the federal government moved to Washington, and by the 1870s its growing collection of books and copyright deposits had outgrown those quarters. This drawing, made in the architectural style of its day, presents a proposed separate building, a project that would take years of debate and construction before the Jefferson Building opened in 1897. Such renderings were used to win approval and funding, so the sweeping elevations and ornate detail show how the designers hoped to persuade Congress.
