Few images in the Library of Congress's collection show a building that did not yet exist as clearly as this 1873 perspective rendering. By then the library's books had long been housed in the U.S. Capitol, and lawmakers were weighing a separate building to hold them. A perspective drawing like this one let members of Congress picture the finished structure from the street years before any stone was laid. The drawing is kept among the Library's architecture and engineering records, and it captures an early stage of the plan that eventually became the Jefferson Building.
