This perspective rendering shows the Library of Congress as a three-dimensional architectural view, the kind of drawing used to present a building's design before or during construction. It was reproduced by heliotype, a photomechanical process that made printing plates from gelatin-based images and was common in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The Library's Jefferson Building, completed in 1897, was the institution's first building of its own, and renderings like this one helped show its scale and ornament. This copy is held as a reference item in the Prints and Photographs Division.
