A perspective rendering of the Library of Congress's front elevation, executed in ink and watercolor, shows the building as its designers hoped visitors would first see it from the street. The Library occupied the Thomas Jefferson Building on Capitol Hill, designed by John L. Smithmeyer and Paul J. Pelz and opened in 1897 in the Beaux-Arts style. Drawings like this were often used to present a design to officials and to guide construction, and the watercolor washes suggest light and stone in a way that plain line plans cannot.
