Rather than a photograph, this is an ink drawing of the building's front elevation, showing the main facade as its designers planned it. Drawings like this guided construction and helped officials picture a major federal project before it was built. The Library of Congress had outgrown its quarters in the Capitol by the 1890s, and its main building, now called the Thomas Jefferson Building, opened in 1897 in the Beaux-Arts style with elaborate sculpture and decoration. The record does not give a precise date or artist for this copy, so its exact role in the project is uncertain.
