A flat, head-on study of the Library of Congress's front facade, this ink drawing shows the building as its designers meant it to be seen from the street. The Library spent most of the nineteenth century crowded into the Capitol, and its main home, the Thomas Jefferson Building, opened in 1897 in the Beaux-Arts style. Architectural drawings like this one let officials and builders judge proportion, ornament, and symmetry before any stone was set. The sheet is held in the Library's own Prints and Photographs Division, among its architectural and engineering collections.
