A front exterior elevation drawn at 1/32 inch to the foot, this sheet was prepared by P.J. Pelz as part of a design competition entry for a building that would become the Library of Congress. Its mix of graphite, wash, and ink shows how architects of the period combined measured line work with shading to suggest stone massing and depth. The Library's congressional competition of the 1870s drew many submissions, and the eventual Jefferson Building, completed in the 1890s, grew out of that effort. Drawings like this one reveal how early proposals took shape before construction.
