Drawn at 1/32 inch to the foot, this front exterior elevation is the work of P.J. Pelz, who worked with John L. Smithmeyer on the design that won the 1873 competition for a new Library of Congress building. Graphite, ink, and wash combine to show the planned façade as it would appear from the street, with shading that suggests depth and stone. Competition drawings had to persuade a jury at a glance, so the washes do real work, lending the building a weight that plain line work could not convey.
