The Library of Congress spent its early decades housed in the Capitol before its collections outgrew the space, and this ink drawing shows a front elevation of the institution: a flat, head-on view that let architects check a facade's proportions, cornices, and window bays before construction began. The drawing relates to the Library's main building, designed by John L. Smithmeyer and Paul J. Pelz and completed in 1897, now known as the Thomas Jefferson Building. The sheet survives as a reference copy in the Prints and Photographs Division's architectural and engineering holdings.
